Former Lincoln City defender Alex Mitchell is the subject of early transfer talks as Plymouth Argyle explore a permanent move this summer.

The 24-year-old, who enjoyed a hugely popular spell at Sincil Bank, has impressed during his loan stint in Devon and is now firmly on Argyle’s radar.

Mitchell has been a regular for the Pilgrims since arriving on loan from Charlton Athletic in August, making 31 appearances in all competitions. Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley has now confirmed the club have begun “early conversations” about securing the centre back on a permanent basis.

Speaking about the former Imp, Cleverley said:

“From a technical perspective and what the challenges of this league brings, we know you have got to defend your box first and foremost, and he’s outstanding at that.

“But then from a cultural perspective he’s brilliant. He’s one of the favourites amongst the boys. He’s at the centre of all the foolery.

“We are starting early conversations, we want to make that move permanent, but there is a lot of football to be played for the rest of the season and that’s where the focus is.

“We would love Mitch to be here this time next year. He’s a big part of what we do on and off the pitch.”

Mitchell’s rise will be no surprise to City supporters. After progressing through Millwall’s academy system and gaining experience with Bromley, Leyton Orient and St Johnstone, he arrived at Lincoln on a season-long loan in August 2023.

He made his debut from the bench in a 3-0 win against Blackpool and quickly forced his way into the starting XI, operating either on the right of a back three or in a central pairing. Strong in duels, comfortable stepping into midfield and composed in possession, he became a consistent presence throughout the autumn.

His first Lincoln goal came away at Fleetwood Town in October 2023, a month in which he also collected the our Player of the Month award after a string of assured displays. By the end of the 2023-24 campaign, he had made 41 appearances in all competitions, missing very little football and proving a reliable figure in a defence that often had to adapt to injuries and tactical tweaks.

Popularity off the pitch matched his form on it. Few will forget him standing on a table in the Shakespeare beer garden after the defeat to Portsmouth, red flare in hand, fully embracing the supporters. That connection only strengthened his standing among the fanbase.

In June 2024, he completed a permanent move to Charlton on a three-year deal and went on to make 31 league appearances during the 2024-25 season, scoring twice as the Addicks secured promotion to the Championship via the play-offs. A loan switch to Argyle followed in August 2025 to guarantee regular minutes.

Now, with Plymouth pushing on in League One and Mitchell once again a mainstay, a permanent move is under consideration.
