Lincolnshire Non-League Roundup – Big Wins For Promotion Hopefuls Boston and Spalding

Heavy rain wiped out much of the local non-league programme, but there was still plenty of drama where games survived.

A minimum of one inch of rain on Friday night left pitches across the region waterlogged, with Gainsborough Trinity, Grantham Town, Sleaford Town, Skegness Town and Stamford AFC all seeing their fixtures postponed. With Boston United and Harrowby United not in action, the weather took centre stage once again.

The standout fixture of the weekend came in the United Counties Premier League North, where second hosted first in the only game to survive in that division. Boston Town entertained Sherwood Colliery in a top-of-the-table clash and took control from the outset.

After creating a couple of early chances, Boston made their pressure count in the 15th minute when Harry Limb opened the scoring. The contest became more competitive as the half progressed, but Boston held their advantage through to the break.

A couple of tweaks at the start of the second half paid dividends. Zac Munton doubled the lead in the 63rd minute, and seven minutes later Limb was fouled in the penalty area. He picked himself up to convert from the spot and make it 3-0. From there it was virtually all Boston, and Matt Cotton added a fourth to seal a well-deserved victory and cut the gap at the top to five points.

Lincoln United were aiming to extend their good run with a tough trip to Blyth Spartans. They suffered an early setback when Blyth opened the scoring in the seventh minute. United responded well and were the stronger side for much of the first half, forcing a sensational save from the home goalkeeper in the 13th minute and seeing the ball ruled out for offside in the 24th. They went into the interval 1-0 down.

The pattern continued after the break, with United dominating possession and territory but unable to find an equaliser. They were then caught on the break in the 74th minute as Blyth added a second, condemning Lincoln to a 2-0 defeat despite being the more dominant side for long periods.

Spalding United looked to maintain their position at the top of the table against Redditch United, sitting four points clear of Harborough, albeit with their rivals holding four games in hand. They made a flying start as Pugh scored in the second minute, his second goal in two matches. Cybulski added a second in the ninth minute as Spalding piled on the pressure, and Roberts made it three in the 34th minute to give the hosts a commanding half-time lead. The second half was more even, and no further goals followed, leaving the status quo intact at the summit.

At the foot of the table, Pinchbeck hosted South Normanton Athletic knowing victory would lift them out of the relegation places. They created five good chances in the first half but could not find a breakthrough. South Normanton took the lead in the 59th minute, and although Pinchbeck pushed for an equaliser, including a 25-yard effort from substitute Ollie Callaby that drifted just wide, they were beaten by the odd goal.

In the final local fixture, Brigg Town travelled to Glasshoughton Welfare and dominated the first half. Josh Batty opened the scoring in the sixth minute and added a penalty in the 40th. Reece York struck in the 26th minute and capitalised on a poor backpass to score again in the 31st, sending Brigg into the break 4-0 up. Although they could not add to their tally after the interval, the victory secured three points and keeps Brigg in the final play-off place, nine points clear of Leeds UCF, albeit having played four games more.
