Grantham Town Forced To Settle For a Point After Former Imps Keeping Heroics

Grantham Town were forced to settle for a point in a key United Counties League promotion clash after Newark Town fought back in the second half at the South Kesteven Sports Stadium, writes David Ward.

The Gingerbreads remain firmly in the hunt near the top of the Premier Division North, but Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw means the race at the summit remains tight with only a handful of games remaining.

Third hosted fourth in what was billed as one of the standout fixtures of the week, with Grantham looking to maintain their strong run of form and close the gap on Boston Town above them. The home side started brightly and quickly put Newark under pressure, probing for an early breakthrough.

That pressure paid off in the 21st minute when Andrew Wright gave Grantham the lead. The midfielder found the net to cap a positive opening spell for the hosts, and his goal ensured the Gingerbreads went into the interval with a deserved advantage.

Grantham continued to push for a second goal early in the second half, but Newark goalkeeper Scott Loach, a familiar name to Lincoln City supporters, proved difficult to beat. The experienced stopper produced several important interventions to keep his side in the contest and prevent Grantham from extending their lead.

As the half wore on, Newark began to grow into the game and started to threaten more regularly. Their persistence paid off in the 67th minute when Harry Alcock struck the equaliser, bringing the visitors level and setting up a tense final period.

Both sides pushed for a winner during the closing stages, but neither could find the decisive goal. Grantham introduced fresh legs from the bench as Dan Dougill and Cameron Johnson entered the fray, while Newark also reshuffled their side in search of momentum.

Despite the late efforts from both teams, the match finished all square, leaving the points shared in what had been an evenly contested encounter.

The result keeps Grantham firmly in the promotion picture. They remain third in the United Counties League Premier Division North with 61 points from 31 matches, just two points behind Boston Town in second place and still holding a game in hand.

Newark, meanwhile, remain fourth on 57 points and continue to apply pressure on the teams above them.

With the season entering its decisive phase, Grantham’s focus will remain on turning games like this into victories as they attempt to close the gap at the top. Even so, avoiding defeat against a direct rival ensures the Gingerbreads remain well placed in what is shaping up to be a fascinating promotion race.
