Rotherham United have sacked Matt Hamshaw just three days before they’re due to face us at Sincil Bank.
The Millers were hammered 5-0 at Peterborough last night, leaving them six points adrift of safety with nine games left to play. Hamshaw, who took over from Steve Evans at the start of the season, won just four of the 24 matches played between beating us 3-0 and his sacking, including an EFL Trophy win against Salford City.
Rotherham confirmed the move was made following Tuesday night’s result, with the board opting to act as they attempt to steer the club away from relegation danger. Despite having lost two of the last five, their best run for months, the hierarchy have decided a change was required to give themselves the best possible chance of survival.
In a statement, the club acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, highlighting Hamshaw’s strong ties to Rotherham and his clear commitment to the cause during his time in charge. However, with the pressure mounting at the bottom end of the table, sentiment has ultimately given way to pragmatism.

A search for a new manager is already underway, with the club indicating that further updates will be provided in due course once an appointment has been finalised.
In the meantime, first team responsibilities will be shared between Dale Tonge, Richard Wood and Andy Warrington, who step in on an interim basis as Rotherham look to stabilise their season during a crucial run-in. Warrington is a former Lincoln City figure – he was goalkeeping coach under Danny and Nicky back in 2018/19, when we won the League Two title.
City will be hunting the first league win against Rotherham at the Bank this century. Our last victory in league football against the Millers at home came on the opening day of the 1999/2000 campaign, our only such win since 1979. We did beat them 3-0 in the EFL Trophy a couple of years ago, a game notable for being Ben Coker’s only Imps outing.
