Former Lincoln City assistant manager John Still has returned to a senior position in the game after linking up with Chelmsford City in the National League South.
Still, who previously had a spell on the coaching staff at Sincil Bank, has been appointed head of football operations at the Essex club, marking another chapter in a long and decorated career in the lower leagues.
The 75-year-old is best known for his success outside the Football League, having built a reputation as one of non-league football’s most effective operators. Across spells with clubs such as Dagenham & Redbridge, Luton Town and Barnet, Still achieved promotion to the Football League on multiple occasions, underlining his ability to construct competitive squads on limited budgets.
His new role will see him oversee football strategy and structure at Chelmsford, providing experience and guidance off the pitch as the club look to push on in the National League South.
Still is known to City fans for his time as John Beck‘s assistant in the mid-nineties. Already a manager, he had been sacked by Peterborough when Beck brought him in, and he remained with us until he was appointed Barnet boss, returning in the opposition dugout within a few months of leaving the Imps.
Still will be working alongside another familiar name in Mark Cooper. The former Peterborough United manager has been confirmed as Chelmsford’s first-team boss ahead of next season, and he’s not remembered quite as fondly by City fans.
Cooper might bring extensive managerial experience of his own, including a spell in charge at London Road and a long career across the Football League and non-league pyramid, but he has been the panto villain at Sincil Bank for many years.
