Sean Roughan left Lincoln City in the summer, looking for a promotion push with Huddersfield Town.
It hasn’t worked out that way, but Roughan has established himself as a key player for the Terriers and will be hoping to kick on next season, especially as he’s seen former teammates celebrating promotion in red and white.
He’s given an interview today where he’s identified this season’s disappointment as something to use as motivation next season. Of course, that is easier said than done, but he’s also identified a key Imps’ strategy that his side might wish to implement.
I have mentioned the huge squad turn at Huddersfield as being a key reason for their persistent failing, and while the Irish defender would not come out and say that, he did allude to the issue in a recent interview.
Speaking about the Imps, he pointed to slow and steady growth, rather than high squad churn, as a key driver behind our success.
“What they’ve done this year was three years in the making,” he told Yorkshire Live. “Getting a few additions here and there every season, not making a big, massive change, because it can put the club or the players in a bit of a limbo of not sure what other players are doing.
“I know them very well. I still speak to a lot of players, and I’ve watched a few games, and they feed off each other. I think if we come back next year and we know what players are doing now, it’d be a lot easier.”

He’s not wrong. As identified in our promotion blueprint series, the Imps’ strength has been in understanding each other, working for each other, and consistency, not just across ten games, but across three seasons.
It’s certainly a fair observation from Roughan, who will be hoping to see Liam Mannig and the Terriers adapting better next season as they look to join us in the Championship.
