Leonard Returns To Birmingham After Surgery

Marc Leonard is set to return to Birmingham City after undergoing surgery on a ruptured Achilles suffered during his loan spell at Hearts.

The midfielder sustained the injury during Hearts’ 1-1 draw with Motherwell, with team-mate Craig Halkett suffering the same injury in the same match.

As reported by Birmingham Live, both players travelled to London for surgery, with Hearts head coach Derek McInnes confirming the severity of the setback.

“Both lads flew to London on Sunday afternoon and both got operated on yesterday morning.

“It was the same surgeon, both within an hour of so of each other. It was a ruptured Achilles for both, so it’s significant injuries. They’ll be out for seven to nine months.”

McInnes also confirmed Leonard would now return to his parent club.

“Marc will travel back to Birmingham today. He’ll be in with the club doctor there.”

The timing is cruel for the 24-year-old, who had impressed during his spell in Scotland and had reportedly attracted interest ahead of the summer window.

Leonard has two years remaining on his Birmingham contract, but any possible move now appears unlikely while he begins a lengthy rehabilitation period. The immediate focus will be on recovery, with the injury expected to rule him out for the rest of 2026 and possibly beyond.
