Cardiff Set For Fagan-Walcott Windfall
Cardiff City are in line for a financial boost after a sell-on clause was triggered by Malachi Fagan-Walcott’s move from York City to Hearts.
The Bluebirds are understood to have negotiated a sell-on clause of around 30% when the defender left for York last summer. Hearts have now paid a fee in excess of £700,000 before add-ons, meaning Cardiff are expected to receive more than £200,000 from the deal.
Fagan-Walcott’s exit from Cardiff had raised eyebrows in some quarters, given his promise and the impression he had made in the club’s Under-21s and during brief first-team involvement. However, the decision was influenced by the belief that academy graduate Dylan Lawlor was ready to move closer to the senior picture, and that keeping Fagan-Walcott could have blocked that pathway.
That call now looks to have brought a dual benefit. Cardiff receive a six-figure windfall from the sell-on clause, while Lawlor has emerged as one of their most valuable young assets, with reported interest from England, Europe and North America. Fagan-Walcott, meanwhile, helped York win promotion back to the Football League and has signed a four-year deal at Tynecastle.
