Released Boston United Man in Top-Flight Trial

Former Boston United winger Liam McCarron could be handed a route back into full-time football after being lined up for a trial with Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone.

The 25-year-old is a free agent after leaving the Pilgrims at the end of last season, having been included on Boston’s retained list among those departing the Jakemans Community Stadium.

McCarron only joined Boston in February, arriving on a short-term deal until the end of the 2025/26 campaign. The former Leeds United, Stoke City and Northampton Town wide man was brought in as a left-sided attacking option, but his spell in Lincolnshire proved brief.

He made two appearances for the Pilgrims before his release and is now set for a fresh opportunity in Scotland. Reports suggest he is heading to McDiarmid Park this week, where he will look to impress St Johnstone boss Simo Valakari.

The Perth club are preparing for life in the Scottish Premiership, giving McCarron the chance to earn a deal in the top flight north of the border. It would represent a swift step back up the ladder for a player whose career has already included a Premier League appearance.

McCarron came through the academy at Carlisle United, making his senior debut as a teenager and playing 20 times for the Cumbrian club before earning a move to Leeds United in 2019. He later made one Premier League appearance for Leeds before joining Stoke City, followed by a loan spell with Port Vale and a move to Northampton Town.

His time at Northampton included 16 league appearances and one goal during the 2024/25 season, but injury disrupted the second half of that campaign before he was released. A move into the National League with Boston followed, although that short stay has now ended.

McCarron’s next step could now come in Scotland, provided he does enough during his St Johnstone trial to earn a contract.
