Reading are reportedly exploring a loan move for Birmingham City defender Lee Buchanan as he looks to rebuild his career following a lengthy injury absence.
The Royals are said to be considering a move for the 25-year-old, with Luton Town also believed to be interested in taking him on loan from the Championship club. According to the latest reports, Birmingham are open to allowing Buchanan to leave temporarily in search of regular football.
The left-back has not made a competitive appearance for almost 20 months after suffering a serious knee injury in 2024. However, he has been involved throughout pre-season and has so far avoided any further setbacks. That progress is encouraging, but a loan spell may now be the most sensible next step. Buchanan needs sustained minutes rather than occasional appearances, particularly after such a prolonged period away from competitive football.
Reading could offer precisely that opportunity. The Royals would gain an experienced left-sided defender with Championship, League One and Bundesliga experience, while Buchanan would have the chance to rediscover his rhythm in an environment where he could play regularly.
He began his senior career with Derby County and made 75 appearances across all competitions before moving to Werder Bremen in 2022. Buchanan played 23 times during his season in Germany before returning to England with Birmingham the following summer.
His first campaign at St Andrew’s was productive, but injuries have restricted him to only 39 appearances for the Blues since his arrival. Birmingham also have Alex Cochrane available on the left, making Buchanan’s route back into the starting side increasingly difficult.
Chris Davies has remained cautious while discussing the defender’s future, stressing that fitness must remain the immediate priority.
“One thing I will say is Lee has been training very consistently and very well. He’s looked strong.
“It’s been really hard for Lee because he’s just broken down in the two years I’ve been here with a couple of nasty injuries, but he’s strung together a pre-season now which is really promising.
“I’ll speak to Lee in the next coming weeks. For him, regardless of anything right now, the main focus has to be to keep getting fitter and stronger and then we’ll work out what the right path forward is.”
Buchanan still has two years remaining on his Birmingham contract, so a temporary departure would not necessarily signal the end of his time with the club. Instead, it could allow the Blues to protect an asset while giving him the minutes required to prove he can still perform consistently.
