Bolton Wanderers have strengthened their attacking options ahead of Saturday’s Championship meeting with Lincoln City by signing Canadian international Jayden Nelson.
The 23-year-old winger has joined Bolton from Major League Soccer side Austin FC for an undisclosed fee, signing a four-year contract subject to international clearance. The new Bolton signing is expected to train with his teammates on Thursday, placing him in contention to be involved against the Imps this weekend.
Nelson becomes the tenth player recruited by Steven Schumacher’s side during the summer transfer window. His arrival adds further competition in the wide areas following Bolton’s earlier additions of Kyliane Dong and Samuel Iling-Junior.
The winger arrives in England with experience across North America and Europe. After progressing through the Toronto FC academy, he made 45 MLS appearances for the club before joining Norwegian side Rosenborg in February 2023.
Nelson scored five times in 35 league appearances for Rosenborg and featured in the Europa Conference League. He later spent time on loan with German second-tier side SSV Ulm before returning to Canada with Vancouver Whitecaps in January 2025.
He registered a goal and three assists on his league debut for Vancouver against Portland Timbers, before moving to Austin ahead of the 2026 MLS season. Nelson scored twice in 13 league appearances for Austin, playing his final game for the club last Thursday.
World Cup Experience
Nelson has also collected 15 senior caps for Canada, scoring three times. He was added to their 2026 World Cup squad shortly before the tournament and appeared during the co-hosts’ last-16 defeat against Morocco.
“It was really nice to be a part of that squad but I’m still hungry for more and hopefully I get more appearances and we’re able to push further than we were. We created history with that squad, but we’re pushing for more.”
The Ontario-born winger believes his direct style will be suited to the Championship, a division he has long wanted to experience.
“I always wanted to play in the Championship. I know it’s probably one of the most competitive leagues in the world. It’s a lot of back and forth, a lot of fun games to watch and I want to be a part of that.”
Nelson describes himself as a player who enjoys attacking defenders and exploiting transitions, something City may have to be wary of if he receives international clearance in time to feature on Saturday.
“I think the league has a lot of transitions and that’s me. I like to be direct. I like to go one-on-one. I like to have my defender on their heels and that’s something I want to bring to Bolton, so that’s something you should be expecting to see.”
Bolton have made an unbeaten start to their Championship campaign and won their opening home fixture against Preston North End. Nelson watched that game after Wanderers’ interest emerged and admitted the atmosphere added to the appeal of the move.
“When the interest came around that’s the first thing I looked at. I watched the home opener and it was rocking and it gives me chills to see when it’s actually full. I just can’t wait.”
The Imps will now wait to discover whether Bolton’s latest recruit is cleared to make his debut when the two sides meet at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.
