Blackburn Rovers are reportedly set to sign experienced Ghana international Jordan Ayew following his departure from Leicester City.
The 34-year-old has been a free agent since his contract at the King Power Stadium expired during the summer, but he now appears poised to return to the Championship with Tony Mowbray’s side.
According to reports, an agreement has been reached for Ayew to move to Ewood Park. His arrival would not be affected by the closure of the summer transfer window because he is currently without a club.
Blackburn endured a frustrating window and registered 23 senior players, leaving two spaces available in their Championship squad. Their attacking options have also been reduced by an injury to Augustus Kargbo, with Andri Gudjohnsen and Yuki Ohashi currently their two available senior strikers.
Ayew would offer Mowbray experience and considerable versatility across the front line. The Ghana captain can operate as a central striker or from a wider position and has accumulated more than 600 senior appearances during a career spanning France and England.
He began his professional career with Marseille before representing Sochaux and Lorient. Ayew moved to England when Aston Villa signed him in 2015 and subsequently had spells with Swansea City and Crystal Palace.
His most substantial period in English football came at Selhurst Park, where he made more than 200 appearances in all competitions. He was named Crystal Palace’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season for the 2019/20 campaign after scoring nine Premier League goals.
Leicester signed Ayew from Palace for a reported £5 million in August 2024. He scored 12 times in 80 appearances across all competitions for the Foxes, including six goals in 42 Championship outings last season. He also supplied three assists during that campaign, but was released after Leicester suffered relegation to League One.
Ayew featured for Ghana at the 2026 World Cup and is his country’s record appearance holder. He has won 124 senior caps and scored 34 international goals since making his debut in 2010.
Blackburn are 16th in the Championship following their opening five matches. They have not won in three league games since beating Middlesbrough, with their latest result a 2-1 defeat against previously winless Preston North End. Ayew’s anticipated arrival would provide an experienced reinforcement as Mowbray looks to strengthen a squad short of attacking depth.
