“Get Brown on it” was the song associated with Jaden Brown at Sheffield Wednesday, and his arrival initially looked like a clever piece of business. He had just been part of a squad promoted from League One and possessed the technical grounding that came from developing at Tottenham Hotspur. His early displays only added to the optimism. Brown scored during a 7-0 pre-season victory at Boston United and produced an energetic, exciting performance that suggested Lincoln City had found an effective attacking wing-back.
That promise quickly faded as Brown gradually fell out of favour under Mark Kennedy. Michael Skubala offered him another opportunity and selected him for his first match in charge, but by the time City beat Cambridge United 3-0, it appeared increasingly clear that the defender’s future would be elsewhere. Brown seemed to lack confidence in his performances and was known to look at social media after matches to see how supporters had assessed him. He appeared to have a decent heart, but something prevented him from settling and performing consistently. Like Chris Maguire, his signing did not fit the club’s usual recruitment structure. It was an opportunity City moved quickly to take, but 10 league appearances without a goal confirmed that it had not worked.
