David Ward rounds up the midweek non-league action, with Lincoln United enjoying late drama at Beverley, Boston United indebted to their goalkeeper, and mixed fortunes elsewhere for our Lincolnshire sides.
FC Halifax Town 1-1 Boston United
Boston United were looking to bounce back from a disappointing home result at the weekend as they travelled to FC Halifax Town, hoping to continue their recent good away form. The Pilgrims started strongly and created several opportunities to take the lead inside the opening 20 minutes, but after weathering that early pressure, Halifax gradually began to find their feet.
Boston goalkeeper Chadwick was called upon to make a couple of decent saves to keep the game goalless, but it was the visitors who eventually broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark. Lennon Wheeldon produced a superb strike that flew into the bottom corner to give the Pilgrims the lead. The remainder of the half saw plenty of end-to-end action, but United held firm to take their advantage into the interval.
Halifax emerged strongly after the break and needed just two minutes to find an equaliser, albeit courtesy of a fortunate deflection. That goal gave the hosts fresh encouragement, and they spent much of the second period pushing for a winner.
Had it not been for the heroics of Chadwick, they would almost certainly have found one. The Boston goalkeeper produced save after save as the Pilgrims came under sustained pressure, ensuring his side eventually returned home with a point. On the balance of the second half, Boston could certainly consider themselves fortunate to have taken something from the contest.
Beverley Town 0-2 Lincoln United
Lincoln United faced what was expected to be a difficult away assignment at Beverley Town, and the opening 45 minutes certainly lived up to those expectations. It was a competitive affair, with plenty of effort from both sides but very little in the way of clear-cut opportunities. Beverley fashioned a couple of half-chances towards the interval, although neither side could find a breakthrough.
The second half was a more open contest, with opportunities at both ends, but the real excitement was reserved for the closing stages. In the 89th minute, Liam Moran struck to put the Whites ahead, seemingly securing all three points for the visitors.
There was still another twist to come, however, as Finley Armond was shown a red card in added time, leaving United to defend their slender advantage with ten men. Beverley sensed an opportunity and pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but their ambition ultimately proved costly.
Five minutes into stoppage time, the Whites caught their hosts on the counterattack, with Daniel Emmanuel finding the net to double the advantage and secure an excellent 2-0 away victory. It was certainly a dramatic way to claim all three points.
Long Eaton United 4-1 Boston Town
Boston Town endured a difficult evening on their travels to Long Eaton United, finding themselves 2-0 down at the interval after a first half in which the hosts were comfortably the better side. Long Eaton dominated proceedings and thoroughly deserved their two-goal advantage, leaving the Poachers with plenty to do after the break.
There was at least some encouragement in the second half, with Boston showing considerably more fight and giving themselves hope when Matt Cotton reduced the deficit in the 63rd minute. Just five minutes later, they thought they had completed the comeback by finding the net again, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.
Unfortunately, that was as close as the visitors came to rescuing anything from the contest. Long Eaton regained control and added two further goals to run out convincing 4-1 winners, leaving Boston Town with a night they will be keen to forget.
Bedworth United 2-1 Grantham Town
Grantham Town were another of our local sides on the road, making the trip to Bedworth United, although their evening got off to the worst possible start when Abdul Saad had to be substituted inside the opening minute.
Despite that early disruption, the Gingerbreads settled into the contest and produced some decent football throughout the first half. Their efforts were rewarded in the 41st minute when Louis Czerwak found the net to give Grantham a deserved advantage heading into the interval.
Unfortunately, things began to unravel after the restart. Bedworth found an equaliser before Grantham were reduced to ten men in the 57th minute, with Osakpolor Solomon receiving his marching orders. It was certainly a busy evening for the referee, who also showed yellow cards to six other players during the contest.
The visitors battled to hold on for a point despite their numerical disadvantage, but Bedworth eventually found a second goal to complete the turnaround and claim all three points. It was a frustrating end to an evening that had initially promised considerably more for the Gingerbreads.
Needham Market 4-0 Stamford
Stamford also endured a night to forget as they travelled to Needham Market, with the Daniels finding themselves on the receiving end of a difficult opening 45 minutes. The hosts were firmly in control and had established a commanding 4-0 advantage by the half-time whistle, leaving Stamford facing an almost impossible task.
There was at least a little more fight from the visitors after the restart, but the damage had already been done. Stamford were unable to find a way back into the contest or even register a consolation goal, with the match eventually finishing 4-0.
It was a disappointing performance and result for the Daniels, who will be keen to put the evening behind them and turn their attention to the next fixture.
Louth Town 1-0 Sleaford Town
There was local derby action as Sleaford Town made the trip to Louth Town, with both sides entering the fixture in confident mood. Sleaford were enjoying a good run of form and had picked up another victory on Saturday, while Louth were fresh from an impressive giant-killing performance against opposition from a step above.
It proved to be an entertaining contest, with action at both ends. Sleaford made the stronger start and were unfortunate not to take an early lead when they rattled the crossbar inside the opening few minutes. However, Louth gradually grew into the game, and it was the White Wolves who eventually made the breakthrough.
The decisive moment came in the 41st minute when Elliot Broughton found the net with an effort from just outside the Sleaford penalty area, sending the hosts into the interval with a slender 1-0 advantage.
The Green Army emerged for the second half determined to find a response and spent much of the remaining 45 minutes pushing forward in search of an equaliser. Louth’s defence stood firm, though, frustrating the visitors and dealing with almost everything thrown their way.
The hosts held on to claim a hard-fought 1-0 victory, gaining a measure of revenge for their 4-1 defeat in the reverse fixture back in August. With one victory apiece, the honours between the two local rivals are now even.
Goole AFC 0-0 Brigg Town
There was another local derby involving Brigg Town, who made the short journey to neighbours Goole AFC looking to extend their unbeaten run.
Brigg began confidently and fashioned two or three decent early opportunities, although they were unable to apply the finishing touch. Goole enjoyed a brief ten-minute spell of pressure themselves, winning a couple of corners, before the visitors took control of the remainder of the opening half. Despite Brigg’s dominance, neither side could find the net, and the teams went into the interval goalless.
The second period began quietly, with much of the action concentrated in midfield, but Brigg gradually reasserted their authority. As the half progressed, Goole became increasingly defensive, at times virtually operating with ten men behind the ball in an attempt to frustrate their visitors.
It was a tactic that worked. For all Brigg’s attacking pressure and territorial dominance, they simply couldn’t find a way through a stubborn home defence, and the contest eventually ended 0-0.
The draw ensured Brigg maintained their unbeaten record, although Goole could also take plenty of satisfaction from becoming the first side this season to prevent their near neighbours from scoring. It was a small achievement for the hosts, but certainly one they could take pride in given Brigg’s form.
