Stoke City Handed Injury Worry After Strong Summer Start

Stoke City face a fitness concern over summer signing Ethan Galbraith after the midfielder was substituted during Northern Ireland’s goalless draw with Georgia on Monday night.

The 25-year-old has scored three goals in his first eight Championship appearances since arriving from Swansea City in July. That immediate contribution makes his availability a significant consideration ahead of Stoke’s return to league action at Bolton Wanderers this weekend.

Galbraith was holding the back of his leg before being withdrawn in the 65th minute at Windsor Park. He returned to applaud supporters after the final whistle, but the seriousness of the problem remains unclear.

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill discussed the demands of the international programme when explaining his substitutions, although his comments did not provide a specific diagnosis for Galbraith.

“You’re looking for freshness. When you get to Game Four you wish you could make seven or eight subs because some of the lads are running on empty. #

“That’s natural, they’ve put so much into these four games and performances right through the squad have been fantastic.”

Galbraith had already been named man of the match against Hungary earlier in the break. He then missed the Ukraine fixture with permission to be with his partner for the birth of their baby boy, before rejoining the squad for the Georgia game.

Galbraith’s Route From Manchester United To Stoke City

Stoke handed Galbraith a four-year contract following a career built through regular football across the EFL. His senior breakthrough initially came at Manchester United, where he made his first-team debut against Astana in the Europa League in November 2019.

That remained his only competitive senior appearance for United, with loan moves providing his opportunity to establish himself. He spent the 2021/22 campaign at Doncaster Rovers, making 33 League One appearances and scoring once, with his goal coming from 30 yards against Cambridge United.

A season at Salford City followed, bringing 32 League Two appearances and four goals. Galbraith then left Old Trafford permanently in 2023, joining Leyton Orient and reuniting with Richie Wellens, who had previously managed him at Doncaster.

His two seasons at Orient produced 78 league appearances and ten goals, alongside further appearances in the cups and play-offs. Across all competitions, he played 96 times and scored 11 goals before earning his move to Swansea in July 2025.

Galbraith adapted to Championship football with 39 league appearances and three goals during his season in south Wales. His overall return was four goals in 44 matches, before Stoke secured his signature this summer.

Former Imp Sings Galbraith Praises

Former Northern Ireland midfielder Michael O’Connor, who encountered Galbraith while playing for us in 2019, has praised the decisions that helped him progress.

“He was technically unreal and the best thing that happened to him was going out on loan and then joining Leyton Orient in 2023.

“He has just kicked on and got a really good move to Stoke in the summer. I do really like him and what he brings to the team.”

An absence would be a meaningful setback for Stoke. Galbraith has already matched his league goal tally from last season, adding an attacking contribution to the experience he gained at Swansea.

His early performances have made this summer move look productive, which gives the injury scare greater significance before Bolton. The next assessment will determine whether Stoke can continue building around that promising start or have to adjust their midfield plans.
