Birmingham City forward Marvin Ducksch is reportedly planning a January departure after growing frustrated with his lack of playing time.
The 32-year-old is understood to favour a return to Germany, with the Bundesliga described as his dream destination. According to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Ducksch is unhappy with his opportunities at St Andrew’s and wants to move during the winter transfer window. His contract runs until 2028, meaning any departure would require an agreement with Birmingham.
Plettenberg reports that a proposed summer switch to Valencia fell through, leaving the former Germany international with Blues. Options in other countries remain possible, although there are currently no offers on the table.
Limited Opportunities At Birmingham
Ducksch has made seven Championship appearances this season, all from the bench, totalling just 95 minutes. His 26-minute outing at Cardiff City on Saturday was his longest appearance of the campaign, and he has yet to register a goal or assist.
That represents a significant change from his first season in English football, when he contributed 11 goals and two assists following his arrival from Werder Bremen. The Blues’ more physical and direct approach this term has also left him looking ill-suited to their current style.
His future had already become a talking point during the summer, despite having two years remaining on his deal. The latest report suggests his limited involvement has strengthened his desire to find regular football elsewhere.
Bundesliga Return Appeals
Ducksch previously made clear that he would consider returning to his homeland, while stressing that the right club and project would matter. Asked about the possibility during the summer, he said in comments reported by BILD:
“I’m relatively open to that. But of course, if there’s a club where I’m convinced by the whole concept, then I would definitely like to return to the Bundesliga or to Germany.”
The striker joined Birmingham in August 2025 after four seasons with Werder Bremen, where he scored 54 goals in 134 competitive appearances. He also earned two senior Germany caps in 2023, having previously played for clubs including Borussia Dortmund, Hannover and Holstein Kiel.
For now, a January departure remains a reported intention rather than an agreed transfer. With no offers currently on the table and his Birmingham contract running until 2028, there is still work to do before Ducksch can secure the return he wants.
