Six Lincoln City Signings Who Looked The Real Deal, But Weren’t

Ryan Semple

Even 20 years later, Ryan Semple remains one of the first names that comes to mind when I think about a signing who never delivered on the promise. He arrived from Peterborough United in the summer of 2006, with Simon Yeo heading in the opposite direction, which immediately gave him something to live up to. With City moving towards a more attacking style, the opportunity appeared to be there for him.

Sadly, injury helped reduce his Lincoln career to just four competitive appearances, all from the bench. His goal against Liverpool came in a friendly, while loans at Chester City and Rushden & Diamonds failed to provide a route back into our side. His final appearance came against Darlington in November 2006, although his contract was not terminated until January 2008.

Semple continued playing in non-league, including spells with Deeping Rangers, Gainsborough Trinity and Boston United, while developing a coaching career. Having worked at Manchester City and returned to Peterborough, he became Posh’s first-team coach in October 2026. He has made far more of an impression in coaching than he ever had the opportunity to make in an Imps shirt.
