I recall Steve Mardenborough fondly, but many will be unaware of who he was. Steve had five minutes of fame as a Wolves player in the early 80’s, scoring the winner against the then mighty Liverpool at Anfield. Following that he scored 11 in two seasons for a poor Newport County side before a switch to Darlington. He always seemed to perform against us and I was delighted when Keith Alexander brought him to the Bank.
The early 90’s were no classic period for Lincoln and in his 21 games he managed just two goals, one in an away draw with Chester and just one at home in a 2-0 win over Colchester. He was seen as an exciting pacey forward, but just a few games before he scored his onl home goal a young man by the name of Darren Huckerby made his debut. Steve didn’t look quite so quick then, and soon he was on his way.
He had a spell at Colchester and again at Newport but soon found his way into the Welsh leagues when he had probably the best spell of his career first with Inter Cardiff and then with Aberystwyth. He last played for Barry Town in a one game spell in 2003.
He was last heard of fervently supporting his Formula 3 driver son Jann while working for an electricity firm in South Wales.
