Not a Long wait now

The Cowley hunt for a full back to offer much needed options may be close toan end. It is thought a Football League player they know well is on his way in the coming days.

Towards the end of last season Braintree had a youngster from Reading called Sean Long on loan. He had spent time with Luton Town earlier in the season, but played in the crucial run in that powered DC and his charges to third in the league.

He signed a full time contract with Championship Reading in the summer and has spent the first six months of the season at Cambridge. He returned to the Madjeski Stadium after playing 11 times for the U’s but is now looking for a loan deal for another six months.

If he is a target for City I doubt very much whether he’ll be coming purely to sit on the bench, Long is rated highly by Reading and I suspect he would be unavailable to us if we weren’t doing so well.

Crucially he hasn’t featured this season in the FA Cup for Cambridge, and if a deal could be struck he might offer valuable cover as early as Saturday for our clash with Ipswich.

The link has been made by a Reading fan who speculated the youngster might have enquired as to the possibility of linking up with our managers again. He isn’t part of Jaap Stam’s immediate plans and is keen for regular football.

Of course all is speculation at this stage, but even on a lunch break in Cleethorpes I’m trying to second guess our transfer policy!
