Four potential captains in the wake of Luke’s departure

Lincoln City will now be looking to appoint a new club captain, following the loss of Luke Waterfall to Shrewsbury Town.

Waterfall has signed a three-year contract at Shrewsbury, a deal that surely gives him security and comfort at 28-years of age. With just twelve months of his Imps’ deal to run, it seems a wise move to take the offer in front of him,

The club will pocket a fee, undisclosed as ever but speculated to be around £50k, which will go some way to attracting a new face or three over the coming days.

Whoever does come in will be working under a new captain and I think there are four names in line for the top job.

Here are the four players that could well be leading the Imps out against Swindon this weekend.

Neal is the multiple Player of the Year and a hugely popular figure at Sincil Bank, as well as bringing top flight knowledge to the side. He’s also got international caps to his name and on paper at least is the most experienced player in the side.

He’s also one of the first names on the team sheet, something to consider when naming a new captain. Danny will want his skipper to feature in 40+ matches this season, making Neal my second favourite for the role.

Lee Frecklington

Freck would seem to be another who has the required knowledge and experience to lead the side, having played lots of Championship football during his career, as well as featuring extensively in League One.

He’d be a popular choice to some degree, having the advantage of knowing the club from top to bottom after coming through the youth ranks here. The only question would be whether he’ll play in 40+ games, something that will be a big consideration.
