‘Dominated the game’, ‘Robbed by the ref’ – Mariners react to derby day draw

The Lincolnshire derby might have ended all square, but in truth it probably should have been a game which Lincoln City took nothing from.

Good teams grind out results though and yesterday we did just that, remaining resolute in front of a hostile (but not sell-out) crowd. Grimsby might have been a team to chuckle at last season, but if they play like that through the course of this campaign they’ll be on the cusp of the top seven at the end of the season.

However, the joy with which their draw was met proves how far Lincoln have come. A 1-1 draw on years gone by would not have been a good result for them, but their fans and players will be happy at holding the inform side in the division. We are the team to beat, for now, and a draw is a result as far as they’re concerned.

We saw it as a point ground out, a patchy display which might have gone against us but for a definite penalty, but the natives didn’t feel the same.

Generally, Grimsby Town fans felt they were done by the referee, robbed of a win by either a soft or dodgy penalty (depending on which fan you listen to). They assess that the home side dominated, which would be hard to argue against, but on the whole they’re happy to have a point.

Michael Jolley, the Mariners boss for those who don’t know, refused to apportion blame to the referee, coming out with a very Cowley-esque response when quizzed about the penalty.

The fans weren’t quite as forgiving, but neither would we be. Here is a selection of their responses from Twitter.
