Former Leeds United star linked with Imps move

Former Leeds United star Aidy White has been linked with a possible move to the Imps, by reputable Scunthorpe United blog Ironbru.net.

As you know, I’ll bring what I believe to be reputable stories only these days, in other words nothing from Team Talk or an ex agent / kitman / physio or whatever. The stories of White training with Scunthorpe gained traction earlier this week and were reported (by me) on Football League World. At the time, it seemed the left back was set to pen a short-term deal with Stuart McCall’s side.

It’s now thought he’s also had some time training with us and could be looking at a deal here. Before you get excited, the 27-year-old has been out of the game since leaving Barnsley in the summer of 2017. He’s very similar to Cameron Stewart in that respect, although his career suffered through injuries, not a self-imposed break on the back of a big settlement for a failed transfer.

White began his career with Leeds and made 85 first team appearances in the league, 72 of which came in the Championship. he fashioned a reputation as a quick full back, able to operate further forward too. For current Leeds fans, he was a bit like a homegrown Ezgjan Alioski. For Imps’ fans, think Harry Toffolo.

He had established himself as a key player for the Whites after winning their Young Player of the Year award in 2010. Between 2011 and 2013 he made 60 Championship appearances, but he fractured his foot in the pre-season of 2014/15. That injury required surgery and when he came back into the fold, he had fallen out of favour. After just two outings all season, he left the club.

He had spent time out on loan with Oldham and Sheffield United, playing League One for both, but secured a permanent deal with Rotherham in the summer of 2015. He struggled to force a start for Rotherham and after a spell on loan at Barnsley, he joined them permanently courtesy of a cancelled contract with the Millers.

Whilst on loan with the Tykes he helped them to a League One play-off final, as well as the EFL Trophy in whatever guise it masqueraded in at the time. Following their promotion to the Championship he struggled for games, starting just ten in 2016/17 before dropping out of the game. He suffered a hip injury and although he didn’t have a contract with Barnsley, as recently as April last year he spoke of still visiting the club for rehabilitation and expressed an intention to get back into the game.

It seems he’s looking to Lincolnshire for route back and, if the Scunthorpe site is to be believed, he could be set for a deal with the Imps. It would likely be something short-term, maybe four months or until the end of the season, merely as cover. It could be a waste of time, much like Cameron Stewart, or it could be a master stroke, just like Neal Eardley and Michael O’Connor.

The lack of cover at left full back has to be a concern of sorts, we have such a strong squad but if Harry Toffolo were to get injured we’re now stuck. Sam Habergham doesn’t look like coming back any time soon and if White is coming in at the right price a deal seems sensible. He’s after a route back into the game and where better to get fit than here?

I don’t believe everything I read (and neither should you) but in terms of the squad, this would make perfect sense.
