‘He’s felt like our player’ – Danny keen to hang on to Imps’ loan star

Danny Cowley has revealed in today’s press conference that’s he’s keen to get a deal for Shay McCartan tied up in the summer, if one can be struck.

McCartan has struggled for game time of late, but started against MK Dons and won the penalty that gave us the lead in the game. He’s on a season-long loan from League One crisis club Bradford City who will likely be swapping places with us in the summer.

When quizzed on McCartan’s future this afternoon, Danny revealed that he’s keen to ensure that a deal is done for the talented Irishman, if at all possible.

“We’re in regular contact with Bradford, Shay’s representatives and Shay himself,” said Sir Danny. “He’s done fantastic for us and has been a huge part of the success we’ve had.”

“He’s felt like our player and we look forward to hopefully trying to get something agreed in the summer.”

The 24-year-old was a key player before the January window, operating behind John Akinde and keeping fan favourite Matt Green on the bench. He soon won supporters over with a series of fine displays and a couple of wonder goals.

His strike against MK Dons at home (pictured above) was a powerful volley, the likes of which usually threaten to smash the glass in the executive boxes, but his execution was superb.

His long-range volley against Swindon in January was outstanding, an instinctive effort blasted over the keeper with just a moment’s thought. He also bagged the Imps 6500th league goal after coming on against Crawley, which will feature as a double page ‘poster pull out’ in the next issue of the Stacey West fanzine.

He struggled to keep his spot when Danny Rowe arrived though, with the pace of Rowe preferred to the more patient approach of McCartan. They’re very different players operating in a similar position and perhaps Rowe complements Akinde more.

It seems that Danny is happy with his current squad having already expressed a desire to keep Danny Rowe and Mark O’Hara beyond their loan deals. Shay McCartan makes it a trio of temporary stars who could still be in red and white next season.
