Popular Bristol City midfielder Joe Morrell has bid farewell to Imps fans with a social media post this afternoon.
Joe left Lincoln for the final time yesterday, popping in to see a young fan before he departed. His loan spell is up and, being brutally honest, he is unlikely to be back here on loan next season by virtue of being too good for this league. He arrived here a Bristol City reserve who we knew little about, and left harbouring hopes of a place in Wales’ Euro 2020 squad, which he would almost certainly have got had the season completed and the tournament been played.
The likeable 23-year-old took to Instagram to thank the people of Lincoln for their support, saying:
“I’ve loved every minute of wearing the red and white this season, and will always be grateful to have had the opportunity to have played for this football club. It’s not the way that I envisaged it ending, but I just wanted to say thank you to the players, staff, supporters and the people of Lincoln for a year that I will only ever look back on with good memories. I wish the club all the best for next season and beyond!”
Morrell became popular during his spell here for his combative edge and quality on the ball. Playing as part of the midfield, he had a license to get forward and was a key factor in us finishing as high as we did. He was one of the few players to retain his place throughout the manager changeover and, had he finished the season, he would likely have been presented with a Player of the Year trophy on the final day against Rochdale.
Imps fans have been keen to express their opinions on Morrell’s Twitter feed, thanking him for his solid service and wishing him all the best for a future that will surely be involved tournament football and a place in a Championship first team in the near future. The best of the responses are below, mixed up with a gallery of his action images from Bubs.
All the best Joe, sorry to see you leave! I know you’ll go far, good luck ?
