Conal Platt
Conal Platt might register n the memories of a few fans from what was a terrible era for our club. What a few might know, is that he started out as a trainee at Liverpool, but struggled to make the grade and was released at the end of the 2005/06 season.
He spent time at Bournemouth and Weymouth before moving to Forest Green Rovers, then a non-league club. After Forest Green he remained in the Blue Square premier, signing for Cambridge United in 2010. He didn’t score in 28 games in 2010/11 but began the following season with two in four before dropping out of favour. After Steve Tilson was sacked, in came DH and his little black book (which had more names in it than a phone directory). One of those names was Platt.
For us, he seemed like a lively forward who signed after a successful loan spell. He scored twice for City, once in a 3-0 win against Ebbsfleet and again as we went down 2-1 to Grimsby on Boxing Day. He was desperately unlucky to break his leg in February 2012 in a behind closed doors friendly with Doncaster Rovers. By the time he had recovered he was playing under Gary Simpson, and despite one more outing against Southport he was released, Simpson claiming that as the club were in a relegation battle he couldn’t accommodate Platt’s recovery.
He later appeared for Gainsborough Trinity and Stalybridge Celtic
