There is a reason I’ve delved deep into the annals of history for this one; an unlikely link between the Imps and the reds comes not far from where I sit writing this article. Ted Savage was born in Louth, attended Louth Grammar School and played locally for Stewton before signing for The Imps. He played right-half for City, which was like right wing-back. He was a success too, being widely regarded as one of the club’s most exciting discoveries of the pre-war era. scoring three times in 96 outings for the club. In 1931, he moved from the Imps to Anfield, one of the few players to make the move. He made his debut for Liverpool on 26th September 1931 in a First Division game against Grimsby, where he scored twice.

The two strikes against Grimsby were the only goals he scored for the Reds, and despite making over 100 appearances, he wasn’t considered a regular starter. He later made a what would be a controversial move, swapping Liverpool for Manchester United. He also appeared for Fulham, West Ham, Chelsea, Carlisle and Wrexham. He retired when the war began in 1938, but also guested for Millwall and York City during wartime leagues.
