92 Paul Mayo

Paul Mayo is the first of Keith alexander’s 2002/03 play-off side to appear on the list. A talented left-back, he earned a big money move to Watford but later returned to the Imps before departing for Notts County. Mayo was a home-grown talent and a local boy done good, best known for his stunning goal against Scunthorpe in 2003.
91 Gary Lund
Something delights me about seeing Gary Lund on the list; the striker had six decent months for City before dropping off the edge of a cliff, but what a six months they were. He was leading scorer in 1986/87 season, and went on to play in the top flight for Notts County. Lund had no place in that faltering side that was relegated, but his efforts have struck a chord with our readers, that’s for sure.
90 Sam Habergham

Habergham Sam, he’s my main man. I am pretty sure Dave Mallett sang that, but for a short while recently Sam Habergham was the main man. That free-kick against Torquay sticks in the kind, but he ramped up from a steady seven to a great eight every week as we pushed hard for a place in the Football League. His efforts, playing through the pain barrier, were rewarded with a title-winning medal, but those injuries took their toll and he’s not been seen in football since 2017/18.
89 Andrew Boyce
Boyce played just 66 matches for City, a decent player in a time of real strife, but his efforts were duly rewarded a move to Scunthorpe United. That would have been a step up back then by the way, and the big defender looked set for a long and successful career in the game. He’s still playing now, in the National League with Eastleigh, having also been with Grimsby Town and Notts County
88 John Whitney
John Whitney was a tough full back who epitomises the John Beck ‘all for one and one for all’ approach. He was tough-tackling, no-nonsense and helped us to promotion in 1998. He made 121 outings for the club before a move to Hull City, later managing Walsall.
87 Jeff Smith
Smith was the dependable left back who appeared 315 times for City in the league between 1958 and 1967. Those were tough times for the Imps, dropping through the divisions like a stone, and they were not easy for players looking to be remembered. Smith’s efforts for the club see him make our top 100 after finishing 55 in the all-time vote in 2007.
86 John McGinley
McGinley endeared himself to City fans by remaining at the club following relegation from the Football League, having appeared for us in the mid-eighties having joined from Charleroi in Belgium. He moved to Rotherham, returning in 1987 and finishing as joint leading scorer in the 1987/88 season with Phil Brown. He scored 39 times in total for the Imps before leaving for Doncaster Rovers.
85 David Johnson
‘Magic’ Johnson cost the club £32,000 from Sheffield Wednesday and is perhaps best known for cup goals that saw us beat Premier League Crystal Palace 1-0 at the Bank, as well as lose 3-1 live on Sky to Bolton in the FA Cup. Johnson was both a winger and a striker, He loved a cup goal, scoring in both Coca Cola Cup matches with Everton too. He bagged 23 times in 105 outings for the club.
