The Under 18s registered a win against Bradford City on Saturday, despite one or two notable absences.
The Under 18 side that travelled to West Yorkshire did not feature Hayden Cann, Sean Roughan, Freddie Draper or Sam long, all of whom will likely be in or around the first-team squad tomorrow evening. The youngsters did have Jovon Makama playing, and whilst Draper stole the show against Watford, it was another former Derby youngster doing the damage.
Makama featured for the first team in pre-season and has quietly gone about his business with the Under 18s after joining from Derby. He opened the scoring on six minutes, Kyrell Wheatley playing a ball through the Bantams’ defence which Makama converted with ease.
It was Draper’s volleys getting airtime against Watford, and whilst the cameras weren’t running for this game, Makama supplied one of his own fans would surely have loved. A cleared corner dropped to him and he lashed a right-footed volley into the back of the net for his second.
Brennan Johnson recently bagged the first Imps senior hat trick of the season, adding a third from the penalty spot. Makama, a confident two-footed striker, wasn’t afforded the luxury of a kick from 12 yards, so he made his own luck. he went on a mazy run, before finishing with his left peg to seal the win for the young Imps.
Keeper Matthew Boylan kept the score at 3-0 with a fine fingertip save late on, but there were no more goals and the youths went home happy. It is nice to hear of the young side doing well without the names fans already know because it indicates a strong pool of players waiting in the wings for their chance. certainly, with three goals, Makama’s name is bound to begin to get a mention in some circles, as well as that of Nathan Odokonyero, who has also impressed with a hat trick for the youths this season.
