Most Goals Per Games

Somma might not have reached double figures, but in terms of goals per game, he is the best striker we’ve had in the last 27 years. The Leeds man struck nine times in just 14 matches, all starts, giving him a ratio of 0.64 goals per game. That was also without penalties, which is a massive achievement.
Sadly, from an Imps point of view, the next best ratio of goals to games was also a loan player, Millwall striker Ashley Grimes. He smashed 15 in 24 matches, although he failed to score after early March, but still achieved a credible 0.56 goals per game. He did net two penalties, but he also came off the bench three times, reducing his minutes. If I could be arsed to work it out, it might actually make him slightly more prolific than Somma. To loop this back to my point about deadly strikers, our two deadliest came in 2009/10 and 2010/11, both awful seasons for us.
Next up is Ainsworth, who we’ve covered, with Tyler Walker making up the top four. Walker scored 14 in 26 matches, two from the spot and 12 from open play, giving him a total of 0.48 goals per game. That’s tied with Yeo in the 2004/05 season.

Now, if you take out penalties, there’s an interesting shift. In terms of goals from open play, Somma is still first and Grimes still second, but Ben Wright becomes the third most prolific, with 15 goals from 34 outings. If you’d asked me which player we actually owned, from the leading scorers of the last 27 years, had the best goals-to-games ratio, I wouldn’t have picked Wright. Again, perhaps he is massively underrated for his time here and suffered from playing in a relatively poor Lincoln side.
