Pure Artistry
The first question on everyone’s lips at the end of the season was, of course, “Which teams are the best at drawing” (oh, yes, prepare for lots of bad pun titles, not sorry).
Well, obviously, it’s not. But as Imps fans, we are determined to be proud of something, and the most obvious is how many draws we had. I mean to be fair at one point it was all about being undefeated at home, and then potentially how few losses we’d had. But the end of the season sort of unravelled that. So here we are, back to draws.
No surprise that the Imps top this table with twenty draws – nearly half the season. However, Portsmouth are only just behind on nineteen. They finished eighth in the real league, and given the third and fourth are Fleetwood (13th) and Charlton (10th) these results suggest our part of the official table was overall hampered by draws.
In fact, Ipswich are surprisingly high in this league, landing joint fourth alongside Oxford, Charlton, and Morecambe. The key difference for Tractor Boys is that they converted defeats into draws whereas the rest of us converted wins.
Plymouth, Barnsley, Cambridge, and Peterborough are the “relegated” sides from this league. That’s three of the official top six, which isn’t unexpected. Cambridge’s position as second from the bottom does point to one reason they scraped survival on the final day of the season. Their count of seven draws is almost half that of most of the other relegation contenders.
