Addressing The Jordan Wright To Grimsby Rumours

Yesterday, news broke that Grimsby Town are eyeing a move for Jordan Wright.

Having a finger in The Real EFL pie can be difficult for me at times because if there’s a Lincoln exclusive from another source, I try to stay out of it. Therefore, I left it for a day before offering some sort of insight.

It doesn’t surprise me Jordan is being linked with a move away from the club, and if it is accurate, you can’t blame him for making a move. Lukas Jensen is still an Imp right now, and there’s no suggestion he will move on just yet. Jordan has diligently served as an understudy to two of the best keepers we’ve seen at the Bank in years, and he’s surely ready to make a number one shirt his own.

There will be some who feel that it should be here, but with Sam Long having just gone a season unbeaten at Falkirk and earning great reviews, we are blessed with some good keepers. It won’t surprise me if we’re not monitoring keepers in case Lukas goes as well. Our transfer policy is always to come out of a window stronger than when we went in, so if we were to sell Lukas and then promote Jordan and (for instance) keep Sam around, it could be argued we’d be weaker for it. That’s no slur on the two understudy keepers either, by the way, both of whom have never let the club down.

With Sam Long, I could see him being our understudy. His loan at Falkirk went well, and he’ll be filled with confidence after putting a tough 2022/23 season behiund him. However, I don’t think Jordan will be content with playing second fiddle much longer. He’s 25 now, and is at a point where he’ll be wanting to step out of the shadows and be his own man.

I understand that, and if he were to take a step down to League Two to achieve that, I’d respect him for it as well. Whatever our rivalry makes me say, the truth is Grimsby are a decent-sized team on hard times right now. They shouldn’t be at the foot of League Two, scrapping with the likes of Sutton United. With the right set of circumstances, they’d be a top-seven side, and that’s the sort of opportunity a player surely sees.

I also have no issue with players moving between the clubs. We’ve had some big players from Grimsby over the years, and they’ve done well out of us as well. It makes sense from the player’s point of view; there is no need to up sticks and move, and no major changes in their day-to-day life, apart from driving to a training ground called Cheapside rather than the Elite Performance Centre.

Do I think there are legs in the rumour? I wouldn’t pour scorn on something that one of the Real EFL guys has sourced, because they operate to strict guidelines. You’ll see no ‘Grimsby, Burton and Rotherham are linked with Jordan Wright’, no rule of three on the site, not if it is an exlcusive.

I guess it’s one we’ll just have to watch develop.
