Imps To Face Grimsby As Cup Draw Made

City will face Grimsby Town in competitive action for the first time since 2019 as the draw for the EFL Trophy has been made.

The last time we faced our local rivals we were en route to a title win, winning 1-0 thanks to Harry Toffolo’s goal. It’s been even longer since we faced them in a cup competition – 2006, when we were held to a 0-0 draw in the same month we thrashed Rochdale 7-1 and Barnet 5-0.

The group will also feature Chesterfield, heading back into the Football League. Our last meeting with the Spireites was in the 2017/18 season, with us winning 3-1 at their place ahead of their relegation. We have faced them in the EFL Trophy before, winning 4-3 in 2003 in extra time.

The group will be made up by an Under 21 side, but they’re not added to the draw until Thursday. The roster of ‘Northern’ Under 21 teams will be familiar by now, with one of Aston Villa U21, Everton U21, Liverpool U21, Manchester City U21, Manchester United U21, Newcastle United U21, Nottingham Forest U21 or Wolverhampton Wanderers U21. The teams in brackets are ones we have already faced in the group stages.

City have only once failed to get out of the group stage, that being in 2019/20 around the time of Danny Cowley’s departure. Last season, we progressed from the group stage in second place, behind Derby County, but were beaten 1-0 by Accrington in round two.

The Imps will be in Group G for the competition. ‘Fun’ fact – we were also in Group G in 2017/18, the year we won the competition.
