City won their second pre-season friendly of four this afternoon, with a 2-1 victory behind closed doors against Walsall.

Having beaten Preston 1-0, the Imps lost 3-0 behind closed doors to Leeds United, and then drew 0-0 with Oldham. They were back on the goal trail this afternoon, although details of the game are fairly sketchy.

Walsall featured a strong side, with former Middlesbrough and Aston Villa winger Albert Adomah making his debut (of sorts, friendlies don’t really count) for the Saddlers.

Wearing the new white away kit, the Imps impressed in the first half at the Bescot, with Jovon Makama in the thick of the action. He took his pre-season tally to two with the opener on 30 minutes, and could have made it 2-0 moments after, rattling the crossbar.

New signing Tom Bayliss then chipped in with a goal, smashing the ball through a crowd to double the Imps lead. That came just moments after the former Coventry man had struck the post, with City looking dangerous on the attack.

Makama had a glorious chance to make it 3-0 in the second half, but Liam Gordon’s diving tackle denied him. Their new signing Jamie Jellis then reduced the deficit with a goal after good work from one of the numerous triallists featured on the home side.

Two more triallists played a key role for Walsall, one blazing over the bar on 80 minutes when a goal looked certain, and another making a last-ditch tackle to stop City making it 3-1 at the death.

Michael Skubala was happy with the runout, commenting on the club’s official site: “It was a fantastic runout and was good to get some more minutes in the legs against tough opposition that are very physical and direct.

“It’s just making sure we balance the workload as we’re building, getting minutes in the legs without getting injuries and then trying to implement what we’re doing on the training pitch into the game.”

The Imps are next in action this weekend away at Harrogate Town, before returning to the Bank a week on Saturday.
