The Magnificent Seven – Midfield Mystery The Imps Must Solve

Everyone of a certain age remembers the Magnificent Seven – the selection of players King of Hype Peter Jackson brought in over the summer of 2008, only for them to underwhelm.

On paper, some of them looked outstanding – Kevin Gall had been prolific once. Stefan Oakes was a player I’d have signed twice at the time, and Aaron Brown had experience higher up. Sadly, it just didn’t quite work, and their names will forever be linked with hyperbole, all thrust, and no squirt, so to speak.

Looking over the squad this morning, it occured to me we have a new Magnificent Seven, a new selection of players around the lucky number on which we can base our hopes and dreams. This Magnificent Seven are the central midfielders we’ve signed or owned before the summer kicked in: Ethan Erhahon, Ethan Hamilton, Conor McGrandles, Oisin Gallagher, Tom Bayliss, JJ McKiernan, and Dom Jefferies.

Seven players. Three (possibly) positions. Seven into three doesn’t go……

How are we going to keep them all happy? What does best look like when laying out our midfield choices? I wanted to do a deep dive today into our midfield, giving you all the information you’ll need ahead of the trip to Burton.

Assuming we don’t sign another, of course.
