Everybody seemed to like my John Schofield XI the other day, which argued that in a 3-5-2 formation, his side might have been a success today.
It wasn’t hard to argue—Schoey’s side was impressive, and we did have some great days out with them. However, when you think back to Chris Sutton, there’s not quite as much positivity.
Could I possibly argue a case for Sutton’s best (theoretical) XI to be competitive at the top end of League One? Surely not?
Well, I think I can. Seriously, if you took the very best XI players from Sutton’s reign and played them in a certain formation, you’d have a team that, right now, in the modern game, could play top-ten League One football. Remember, the game has changed significantly—the loans would be for a full season, and possession-based football reliant on skill and pace is far more prevalent and successful than it was 15 years ago.
Still, to argue a manager who spent his entire Imps tenure fighting relegation from League Two had the players over the course of his reign to be top-end League One, that will take some doing, right?
Wrong.
Here’s how I think Chris Sutton’s best XI would be top ten League One today. Enjoy.
