Morecambe manager Derek Adams has admitted his side are ‘still working’ to agree a fee for JJ McKiernan, despite the player joining City in pre-season.
McKiernan, called up by Northern Ireland Under 21s this week, joined City with no fee agreed. The plan, as far as I am aware, is for that to go to a development tribunal. There’s no date on that, but given McKiernan had only a single season at Morecambe, the fee is unlikely to be large.
That’s of no use to the Shrimpers, according to former Plymouth boss Adams. He’s desperate to add recruits before the transfer window closes, and admits that he would like his side to agree a fee with us without going to the tribunal.
“Both clubs are still working on that so we’ll have to wait and see,” said Adams, when quizzed on a possible fee by the Lancaster Guardian. “It’s one of those things where we could wait for the tribunal but whenever that might be is not going to be beneficial for us.
“Any money we get in would help us but I need to know one way or another today or, possibly, early Friday if we can do any business.
“If we do bring anyone in, it’s likely to only be one player. Two players would be a push.”
The 22-year-old, who was born in Southampton, moved to Sincil Bank in the summer after a single season with Morecambe. After coming through the youth ranks with Watford, he turned professional, enjoying stints on loan with Bohemians and Eastleigh.
His form for the latter prompted Morecambe to offer him a one-year deal. He made history there in October, scoring their first-ever away hat-trick against Colchester United. At the end of the season, despite Morecambe being keen to retain his services, we swooped, securing him on a four-year contract.
