Interest in Ethan Erhahon is heating up, according to a report from TBR.
Our crown jewel has had a solid start to the season, and it’s something of a surprise that a bid wasn’t forthcoming in the summer window. However, we were lucky, he stayed put to help control our midfield for another six months, at least.
The hope is, of course, that we hang on to him until the end of the season, but that’s looking less likely in the face of today’s report. Several clubs are being credited with an interest, two of which are vying for a promotion to the Premier League. That’s the sort of move Ethan deserves, and the sort of move we would not block, should it become possible.
The two ‘big’ clubs wanting him, if the reports are to be believed, are West Brom and Burnley, rivals at the right end of the table. Burnley and West Brom both saw their first-choice defensive midfielders depart during the summer. Okay Yokuslu returned to Turkey to sign with Trabzonspor, while Sander Berge moved to Fulham, despite reported interest from Manchester United.
That means there’s space available for the right player and being honest, Ethan is the right player. He has no business in this division, and if there’s solid interest in the winter window, we know a bid over £1 million would be required. Finally, the Imps’ first £1m player!
As much as it would be a wrench to see him leave, it is the way the club build and progress, and £1 million (plus) in could well mean a war chest to reach into ourselves in the winter. We saw the impact transfer had this January, with Jack Moylan and Joe Taylor two players who impressed hugely. What could we do with money in January?
The other clubs eyeing a move for Ethan are Hull City and Norwich City. Hull are currently struggling and have been in our division recently, while Norwich are a traditional Premier League yo-yo club, but they’re also currently going through quite a tough spell.
The news that several clubs are interested could be positive for us. There’s a set fee we’d accept for the player, but it might be that the clubs start to try to outbid each other, as the fee we have in mind isn’t a set release clause. Also, with eyes on him, Erhahon is likely to remain focused on his football – no move can be made before January, meaning he has a couple more months to impress scouts.
Who knows, if he’s catching the eye of the Championship’s top sides right now, what could a couple more months do, especially with so many Premier League teams still winless and looking light in midfield?
