Firstly, if you haven’t seen it already, please check out the raffle with some great imps prizes to be had, here.
Secondly, thank you to everyone who keeps donating and backing me on this journey. The big day is beginning to loom large, and at present, I’m at £2813 for the Foundation, which is amazing. I’m sure I can break the £3500 barrier, perhaps even higher, but that won’t happen without updates, right?
So, here’s an update.
Today, I did an interval run. I remember when my intervals used to be a couple of hundred metres, but today, I had a kilometre, then two, then one. With 400m of ‘rest’ in between and a ten-minute warm-up or down either side, it made for a run just under 10k. I’m quite mad, as the OCD in me really wanted to do the full ten, but by the end, I just settled for doing the run as planned.
I’m finding running a really great escape. It’s weird because when I started, I was told the training would be challenging and that much of that challenge was mental, not physical. However, I’m at a point where I genuinely believe that without my training, I would have seriously struggled mentally this winter. I’m not sure what it is, maybe a touch of seasonal affective disorder, but the last few months have felt like a huge challenge. Honestly, right now, they still do.
However, that dissipates when I’m on a run. There’s clarity to what I’m doing, and rather than dreading the upcoming 18-mile haul I’ve got to do, I’m looking forward to it. I didn’t run on Sunday or Monday, and the worst night’s sleep I had was on last night. I woke this morning feeling jaded, anxious and even a little angry for some reason.
Not as angry as I felt when I got to Wragby to do my run and had forgotten my bloody headphones! I always thought I was a well-prepared man, but obviously not. To get around, I tucked my phone into the rear of my new running vest, cranked the volume up full and had a Rage Against The Machine playlist blasting out. I’m not ruling out running like that in the future, I could certainly hear the cars much better!

The run was pretty routine, a bit tough at first. I had a big night out on Saturday, my last one before London, and I could feel it in my lungs for the first half of the run. I’ve had a few little niggles as well – doing 44 miles (in total) last week did take its toll, and while two days rest might not have felt great mentally, my body physically felt a lot better as I ran. I’ve done so well to avoid injury up until this point, and I hope to keep that up until April 27th.
This week, I will do a little six-mile run on Thursday, which I’m likely to do around the same loop as today, and then a mammoth 18 miles on Saturday. Squeezing that in before the football might be a challenge, although not quite as challenging as the 20 miles I’ve got to do before the Exeter game a week later!
That’s the update so far. Please check out the raffle, as there are some great prizes, and it would be nice to raise a good chunk of coin through that to add to the total, especially after so many generous prize donations.
