EFL-Era Winter Signings: Is James Collins The Best We’ve Made?

Regan Poole

I remember Poole arriving and being announced live on Match Day Live with myself and Sam Ashoo. What a moment – I’d admired Poole at Newport and MK Dons, and his capture, in my eyes, was a massive coup. He was our player, and yet it took some fans a while to warm to him. They felt we needed something in attack, not a defender, and when he gave a penalty away against Hull in a crucial promotion game, his stock dropped.

He was then a man mountain for two seasons, impressing under both Appleton and Mark Kennedy. He was Player of the Season under Appleton, the only player not to get injured, it seemed, but he did leave for free, which was disappointing, if not unavoidable.
