Here’s the disappointing thing for you – I’m not going to answer the question I’ve asked.
The reason I won’t is that it is subjective. At present, James Collins is doing well, but he’s only a few games in. To compare him to a player we signed who played for many seasons, such as Anthony Scully, is tough. Are we judging this on immediate impact or longevity? If it’s the latter, could we even count a loan player?
There are too many variables, and given that the EFL-era (it was the Football League when we dropped out, so I’m talking 2017 onwards) has seen 51 winter window transfers, all with differing circumstances, picking the ‘best’ is impossible.
I can pick the top ten though, and let you arrange them. So, in chronological order, here they are.
(Spoiler – I have picked the ‘best’ in my opinion on the final page).
Anthony Scully

One of the first winter signings we made to have a huge effect (and apologies to Tom Pett and Lee Frecklington here) was Anthony Scully. He arrived the day after the window closed, but paperwork was submitted before.
It was an exciting capture, and rightly so. Scully went on to score 37 goals for the Imps, and grab plenty of assists, before a six-figure transfer to Wigan.
He was our player, we turned a profit, and he had a significant impact during his time with us. In terms of best EFL-era winter signings, he has to be right up there.
