Reading vow “strongest possible action” after alleged racist comment at Exeter
Reading have issued a statement promising the “strongest possible action” if an alleged racist comment from one of their supporters at Exeter City is proven. Saturday’s League One match at St James Park was paused in the 74th minute by referee James Durkin after the allegation was raised by a player. The fixture, attended by about 1,000 Reading fans, finished 1-1, with Jack Marriott’s early opener cancelled out by former Royal Jayden Wareham.
The club reiterated its zero-tolerance stance and confirmed it will work with Exeter and the relevant authorities during the investigation.
“There is no place for racism in football or in society, and we maintain a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of discrimination… Should the allegations be confirmed, we will support the strongest possible action against those responsible.”
Both clubs are assisting with enquiries as the governing bodies assess the incident. The pause in play and immediate communication underline the protocols now in place across the EFL to address discriminatory behaviour. Reading’s statement stressed cooperation with all parties as they seek to establish the facts surrounding what was alleged during the second half.
