‘Let Them Off The Hook’ – Barnsley Boss On City Defeat

Barnsley boss Conor Hourihane believes his side let Lincoln City off the hook last night.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, he explained how he felt his side played ‘really well’ before scoring, only to be let off the hook.

City opened the scoring in the first half, with more shots, more on target and twice as much xG, and perhaps should have been further ahead, especially as the best chance, Jack Moylan’s one-on-one, didn’t register as a shot or count towards xG.

The Tykes did come out lively in the second period, with six shots before David Keillor-Dunn scored. 13 seconds after kick off, City led 2-1 again, as a long ball from George Wickens caught out the entire Barnsley defence, and that moment infuriated the former Derby County midfielder, Hourihane.

“Until we scored, we played really, really well and it looked like we were going to score and were on the front foot and then after scoring, we had a complete moment of madness; I don’t know what we are doing.

“To concede like that is crazy. I cannot get my head around it and don’t know what they were thinking or doing as a team. We’ve worked so hard to get back in the game at a tough place and I feel like if we see out a couple of minutes, we go back to dominating the ball and creating more chances,”

City followed that three minutes later with a third, which killed the tie, but Hourhiane believes it was that moment which cost his side.

“We just let them off the hook massively. Just stay solid for two or three minutes. Regain your composure.

“We gave them the upper hand straightaway, which was crazy. Until the 67th minute at 1-1, I thought we played really well. We had them where we wanted, but we just threw it away.”

The result leaves Barnsley 10th on 25 points, nine points behind us with three games in hand. Our win, the fourth on the spin at home, saw us climb a place to third, four points behind leaders Cardiff City, with the Bluebirds the next visitors at the Bank in ten day’s time.
