Lincoln City Transfer Window Specialist Striker Released By Current Club

Two names always evoke images of the transfer window when it comes to the Imps – Michael Bridges at the Bentley, and Lee Angol.

There may well be a few raised eyebrows when I deliver the news that Lee Angol has left Cheltenham Town after agreeing a contract termination, bringing an end to a short and goalless spell with the League Two side.

The 31-year-old departs having made 11 appearances in all competitions following his summer move, with Cheltenham confirming the decision earlier today.

Angol departs Cheltenham Town

Angol joined Cheltenham in the summer after leaving Morecambe, but failed to score during his brief time at Whaddon Road. A club statement wished the striker well in his future career, drawing a line under a move that never quite found momentum.

For Lincoln City supporters, Angol’s name will always be tied to one of the most eye-catching loan spells of the Danny Cowley era. He first arrived at Sincil Bank on loan from Peterborough United in March 2017 and made an immediate impact that ensured his place in Imps folklore.

His debut could scarcely have gone better. Thrown straight into the starting XI away at Braintree Town, Angol scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 victory, becoming the first Lincoln player to score a debut hat-trick since Billy Cobb against Luton in the mid-sixties.

Over that spring, Angol made 13 appearances in all competitions and scored six goals, offering pace, movement and a calmness in front of goal that fit perfectly with Cowley’s aggressive, front-foot style. His contribution came during a transformative period for the club, and it was widely assumed that a permanent move would follow once his time at Peterborough came to an end.

Rather than returning permanently to Lincoln, Angol opted for a summer move to Mansfield Town under Steve Evans, scoring nine league goals in 2017-18, before later joining Shrewsbury Town. He returned to Sincil Bank briefly in January 2019 on deadline day, during City’s title-winning League Two season. That earned him a slightly more infamous reputation, appearing just twice.

Since then, Angol has remained a familiar EFL figure, with spells at Leyton Orient, Bradford City and Sutton United, as well as a short loan at Woking. He scored seven league goals for Morecambe in 2024-25 before joining Cheltenham Town in June 2025.

I’m not so sure he’ll make it three surprise arrivals out of three in this window!
