Reading’s hierarchy have made it clear that the January transfer window will be used to strengthen, with director Rick Catania stressing there is room for improvement across the squad.
With the window fast approaching, the Royals are already signalling intent rather than caution as they look to support Leam Richardson’s rebuild.
January window viewed as essential
Speaking to the Reading Chronicle, Rick Catania underlined just how important the next window will be for the club, making it clear that inactivity is not an option. Catania joined Reading’s board in September after HC Sports Ventures acquired a minority stake in Dogwood Football LLC, and his comments suggest alignment between ownership, recruitment and the head coach.
“We only get two transfer windows a year. Every single one is very important, and it would be irresponsible to say that we won’t do anything.
“I don’t think anyone is going to look at January coming in and feel like they can’t make improvements to the squad, whether that’s in or out.”

Recruitment aligned with Richardson’s vision
Catania was keen to highlight the work already taking place behind the scenes, stressing that recruitment is now closely tied to Richardson’s clearly defined ideas about squad building and player profiles.
“We’ve got a very good recruiting team, and I think that our various departments mixing in very well with the coaching staff and understanding the vision there is something that we’ve been doing since Leam came in.
“But now we have him in, and he’s very vocal about what he’s looking for in terms of profiles of players and stuff. I think that helps give very good context for our recruiting team to go out and find the right people to bring into the club.”
That clarity appears to be shaping Reading’s approach already. The Royals have been linked with Accrington Stanley defender Benn Ward, formerly of Burnley, as they explore defensive reinforcements ahead of the New Year.
Summer business sets the tone
Since Rob Couhig’s arrival, Reading have been active in the market, blending permanent signings, free transfers and loans to rebuild depth and experience. Two fee-paying deals were completed over the summer, with Paddy Lane arriving from Portsmouth for a reported £250,000 and striker Jack Marriott joining from Wrexham for an undisclosed fee.
Alongside those, the Royals added eight free agents, including Liam Fraser, Paudie O’Connor, Derrick Williams, Daniel Kyerewaa, Matt Ritchie, Jack Stevens, former academy graduate Andy Rinomhota and Randell Williams.

Richardson outlines the type of player required
Following Reading’s recent defeat to Bradford, Richardson was asked directly about what he wants from January additions, and his answer was telling.
“Mentality, that robustness, that winning mentality.”
For clubs like us watching closely, Reading’s messaging is notable. They were expected to be challenging for the top six this season, but instead have already gone through a manager and have failed to impress.
Now, it’s about flexing their muscles to prevent themselves from becoming just another run-of-the-mill League One side, which, in reality, they already are.
