Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Killian Barrett is set to remain with Boston United after his loan spell at the National League club was extended until mid-January.

The 21-year-old joined the Pilgrims on an initial month-long deal in November and will now continue his development into the New Year, as Boston look to consolidate their position in the division.

Barrett, an Irish goalkeeper who signed his first professional contract with Sheffield Wednesday in 2024, arrived at Hillsborough after impressing during a trial period. Since then, the Owls have used the loan system to give him regular senior exposure, with previous spells at Solihull Moors and Rochdale in the National League.

His time at Solihull earlier in the year proved particularly productive, earning an extension after a run of solid performances that included multiple clean sheets. A subsequent loan at Rochdale saw him gain experience at the sharp end of the season, including involvement in the National League play-offs.

Boston United, managed by former Sheffield Wednesday defender Graham Coughlan, currently sit 16th in the National League standings. Barrett has featured since arriving at the Jakemans Community Stadium and will be available for their upcoming home fixture against Aldershot this weekend.

The extension allows Wednesday to continue monitoring Barrett’s progress while ensuring he receives consistent first-team football, a key part of his ongoing development as he pushes to establish himself within the Owls’ senior goalkeeping group.

Boston currently have three other players in on loan. One is Oisin Gallagher, on loan from City, while Tommy Fogarty is there from Birmingham City and Rocco Coyle from Hull City. Coughlan is seeking to keep them in a challenging National League for another season, establishing them once again as a fifth-tier side.

However, Barrett is playing back up to current keeper Rhys Lovett, a former Torquay man, and he’s unlikely to break into the first team during his relatively short stay, despite the extension.
