Bolton Wanderers midfielder Aaron Morley could be on the move in January, with Wycombe Wanderers weighing up a return for a player who made a significant impact during his previous spell at Adams Park.
Morley is expected to leave Bolton when the transfer window opens, having fallen out of Steven Schumacher’s recent matchday plans. The 25-year-old has not featured since Bolton’s 4-0 defeat away at Swindon Town in the FA Cup earlier this month and has missed the last three fixtures entirely.
Despite that absence, Morley was present at Adams Park for Wycombe’s recent 2-1 league victory over Bolton, where he was seen warming up on his own ahead of kick-off. He also spent time speaking with former teammates and members of the Wycombe board, both before and after the game on December 20, further fuelling talk of a potential return.
Morley’s previous loan spell with Wycombe during the 2024-25 campaign was a productive one. He made 23 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice, and quickly became a trusted figure in midfield. Wycombe were keen to extend that loan until the end of the season, but Bolton opted to recall him midway through the campaign.

His final appearance for Wycombe came on January 1st, when he converted a last-minute penalty against Exeter City to secure a dramatic 2-1 home win. That result lifted Wycombe to the top of the League One table with 50 points. Remarkably, after being recalled the same evening, Morley went on to score another stoppage-time winner against Exeter just 72 hours later, this time for Bolton, again in a 2-1 victory.
Interest is not limited to Wycombe. The Free Press understands that Luton Town are also monitoring Morley’s situation ahead of January, with Bolton believed to be seeking a fee in the region of £500,000.
Move that makes sense all around
Morley’s omission from Bolton’s recent squads has not gone unnoticed by supporters, with his absence alongside Josh Dacres-Cogley and Joel Randall prompting speculation around potential departures during the winter window. With fixtures piling up and the season approaching its midpoint, Bolton’s handling of Morley’s situation looks increasingly like a prelude to a permanent move.
For Wycombe, the attraction is obvious. Morley is a known quantity at Adams Park, a midfielder who has already delivered decisive moments in key matches and one whose previous loan spell left a strong impression both on and off the pitch. Whether that familiarity translates into a January return remains to be seen, but the groundwork appears firmly in place.
