Second In League One At Christmas – The Recent History

Lincoln City are second going into the festive period, a good 16 places higher up the division than the budget suggests.

My Dad would be singing ‘we are top of the league’ around the Christmas dinner table, because that’s what he did, and I’d be pointing out that with four more wins, we’d be almost safe for another season. Pessimism would meet optimism across the dinner table, and maybe on the day, I’ll raise a glass and tell him we are indeed top of the league.

Even though we’re not, obviously.

One of the last things my Dad and I spoke about was Lincoln, and he said something along the lines of ‘we’re going to have a good season’. It hurt at the time because I knew he wouldn’t get to find out either way, and I wasn’t looking beyond that huge dark cloud that loomed overhead in the autumn months. I’ve entered that cloud now, but can see out the other side, and everything carries on. Football included.

So, was Dad right? It would pain me to admit to him I’m sure, but as things stand, we’re in for a good season. We’re already in a good season right now. When you’re second at Christmas, that’s been a good five months or so. The next five? Era-defining.

Where do clubs usually finish when second at Christmas? Where do the clubs that finish second come from at Christmas? It smells a lot like an article.

Let’s have a look at the ten-year history, shall we?
