Tobias Brenan is attracting loan interest from a number of League Two clubs this month as Wigan Athletic consider a temporary move to accelerate his development.
The 19-year-old midfielder has broken into the Latics first-team picture during the 2025–26 campaign, making 10 senior appearances across all competitions so far. With opportunities expected to be limited during the second half of the season, Wigan are open to a loan that would allow Brenan to gain regular minutes at senior level.
Brenan joined Wigan in January 2025 after a trial period, having been released by Oxford United earlier in his career. He impressed during pre-season and was handed his senior debut on the opening weekend of the campaign, featuring in a 3-1 win over Northampton Town.
His early-season progress was rewarded in October, when he signed a new three-year contract with the League One club. He didn’t appear against the Imps in our 2-2 draw in September.
Should Tobias Brenan be brought back into the league matchday squads?

While his league minutes have been carefully managed, Brenan has featured in cup competitions and the EFL Trophy, underlining the club’s belief in his long-term potential. Those close to the player view a League Two loan as a logical next step, offering consistent football in a competitive environment while remaining within the EFL structure.
Earlier in his career, Brenan benefited from a spell in non-league with Didcot Town, where he made 14 appearances and scored once during the 2023–24 season. That experience is seen as having helped bridge the gap between academy football and the senior game, a pathway Wigan are keen to continue as he progresses.
Any loan move is expected to be agreed with playing time firmly in mind, with Wigan keen for Brenan to return, having added match sharpness and physical resilience to his game. With several League Two clubs understood to be monitoring the situation, discussions are likely to gather pace as the January window develops.
