Former Lincoln City assistant head coach Mike Garrity has joined Wigan Athletic’s backroom staff.
Garrity joins Ryan Lowe’s side with a wide-ranging coaching background, and not just at Sincil Bank. He spent 13 years at Liverpool, where he held several roles within the academy setup, most notably as a Professional Development Phase coach. During that time, he was heavily involved in supporting young players as they made the step from academy football towards first-team contention at Anfield.
After leaving Liverpool, Garrity gained experience overseas with Norwegian side Molde, as well as working with the China national football team. That period added an international dimension to his CV before a return to England in 2020. Back on home soil, Garrity joined Blackpool as assistant head coach to Neil Critchley, playing a part in the Seasiders’ promotion from League One to the Championship at our expense.

After Critchley left Blackpool, Garrity did too, and his next roles was as Mark Kennedy’s assistant, and he was a big part of our early success. We suffered just two defeats in Kennedy’s first 12 games in charge, culminating in that big 6-3 win at Bristol Rovers. Even when Garrity left in December 2022, we’d still only been beaten five times in the league, fewer than Barnsley and Bolton in 4th and 5th, but we sat 14th in the table.
His departure saw us win just four of the next 22 games in League and Cup. He moved to QPR, and by the time we won back-to-back home games in March, he and Critchley were out of a job at Loftus Road. In 2024, he had a spell at Heart of Midlothian, where he again worked alongside Critchley, and again the spell was only a matter of months.
Garrity was welcomed to Wigan’s Christopher Park training ground on Monday morning and immediately took part in first-team training, integrating with players and staff ahead of Wigan’s upcoming fixtures.
