League One Latest: One Out At Leyton Orient, Blackpool Have More Injury Agony

Grant McCann backs Swindon stance after Vertu Trophy fallout

Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann has spoken in support of Swindon Town following their expulsion from the Vertu Trophy.

As reported by the Swindon Advertiser, Swindon were fined and removed from the competition after fielding two ineligible players in their tie with Luton Town. McCann questioned the decision to reinstate Luton, arguing that once a side is beaten in a competition, they should remain out.

The consequences have extended beyond cup progression. Doncaster’s fixture list has been impacted, with rearrangements creating congestion that could spill into league form. McCann was clear in his frustration, pointing out the strain that prioritising the competition has placed on scheduling.

“For me, it was really disappointing to see. I think Ian Holloway is spot on. He made an honest mistake, or his secretary, whoever it may be, made an honest mistake. It’s easily done with these computer systems now.
“But the way I’ve been brought up is that when you get beaten in a competition, you’re out. So for me, Plymouth should have had a bye, and then we wouldn’t have had any issues. We’d have still played the Luton game.
“Now, we’ve got to try and fit the Luton game in because apparently the Vertu Trophy takes priority over the league, according to the EFL.”

From a League One standpoint, this is more than a cup story. Fixture congestion late in the season influences rotation, fatigue and focus. If league games are squeezed around rescheduled ties, it can distort momentum, particularly for sides hovering around the play-offs or fighting at the bottom. In a campaign where every three points feels magnified, disruption matters.
